Sta. María Magdalena

The origin of this Brotherhood dates back to 1957 with Francisco García as President, thanks to the efforts of a group of young people in order to break the polarization of Holy Week of Rafal around the brotherhoods of “San Juan” and “Santo Tomb”.

The image, which symbolizes the forgiveness of Christ and the capacity for repentance, was carried out by the Murcian sculptor José Sánchez Lozano in 1959. As an anecdotal note, the Raffaleños remember that when they went to collect the image, the artist only showed them the body and The hands, reserving the face, because in his opinion had been so perfect that he wanted to present it in an exhibition.

This cofradia participates in the Holy Saturday night opening the procession of the “Holy Burial” with its banner accompanied by two lanterns and the rows of brotherhoods that pull the throne that carries the holy image. Domingo de Ramos also participates in the joy of the Resurrection in “La Graná”, accompanying the “Virgin of the Rosary”.

After the first years of illusion there was a long period in which the image did not participate in the processional parades. Until again young people, already with feminine contribution, took the reins that the procession boom was imposing.

It began to parade with the penitentes confraternities dressed in civilian, but soon they were made white vestas with blue cape and white capirote. In the years of inactivity many were lost and in the resurgence was chosen by vestas and capirote green without cape. Already in the nineties the penitential costume of the origins was recovered.
